The Ruins of Pompeii (plus pizza in Naples)

It was a hot day under the shadow of Mt Vesuvius, amidst the ruins of ancient Pompeii. But it was a fascinating journey. The remains of the thriving city that once was are now unearthed from beneath the ashes of eruption. Simply amazing. It's hard to imagine that not very long ago this entire city was buried beneath quiet countryside and is just now coming to light. The ruins spanned more space than we could cover in the short hours we visited, but the little we did see just stunned me. There were recovered frescoes and tiled areas that were beautiful to behold, and neat city streets laid out around shops and homes, running water, a coliseum and amphitheater that seated the hordes of people, and so much more. Truly a sight to behold. We ended the day with a brief walk around Naples and had lunch (pizza of course, which by the way was born in Naples) and staggered back to the ship, exhausted, hot but thoroughly enriched with food, culture and history.

Wait until you see Rome!

When I was there the tour was excruciatingly long (4 hours, I believe) and we hardly saw any human remains! I couldn't really understand the guide's thick accent, but I still loved it there. --Mar

Abraham just read a book about Pompeii and he thinks it was cool how you took a picture of one of the bodies! (He's glad they weren't bones!) And he liked the view of how you took the picture of Mt. Etna erupting. It looked like the sun at first. Dorie
