Murano and Burano

Our last day in Venice we spent on a 4 hour guided tour of Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for the Venetian glass factories where they produce, under the hands of some of the greatest glass blowers of the world, some of the finest (and most expensive) glass. We watched a master at work and then toured the gallery of glass. We had a few moments to walk down the streets of this sleepy island (not connected to the main city of Venice). It was very quaint and I really loved the feel of it. It was Venice without all the hustle and bustle and tourism (though there was certainly some of that - tours come and go from the island).

We then proceeded to Burano, another sleepy fishing town that is famous for it's lace and the fact that all the buildings are different colors (said to be that way so that the fisherman, when returning home, would know which house to go to!). This was my favorite of the two towns because it also was quiet - almost surreal...as though someone plunked me in the middle of a movie set. The people were fascinating, as were the colors and (again) the laundry on the lines captivated my interest. I suppose it's strange to have tourists tromping through your front yards photographing your underwear out to dry - but there we were, by the boatload, every hour. Strange indeed, but well worth the visit. I highly recommend both of these side trips if you're heading to Venice and have the chance.

Next post - Dubrovnik! And what a city!

I played peekaboo with this adorable boy, a native of Burano!

Oh my goodness, I LOVE the photos of the houses and laundry! It does probably seem strange to them that tourists want to photograph laundry, but it makes for beautiful photos.

Love the b&w photo of the woman sitting in the lace section. Also the glass blowing photos.

All gorgeous, but the house photos are really something else!
The boy in the beads is beautiful!
